Born in Cambodia, but raised Chinese, I can speak three Chinese
languages and not a word of Cambodian. My grandparents are from
China, but they migrated to Cambodia during the Red Scare/World
War II. My family faced four years of enslavement during the
Cambodian genocide (The Khmer Rouge) in the 1970's. At age one,
my family migrated to the U.S. where education was accepted
as a privilege and a responsibility.
I am the first in my family to graduate from college; during
the graduation ceremony, my name was announced three seconds
before my older sister's name. I come to O.C.E.A.A. with a teaching
credential for elementary education, a supplemental authorization
to teach middle school English, and a Master's degree from U.C.
Irvine. This will be my fourth year teaching at O.C.E.A.A. and
I look forward to an exceptional year!

Some of you know me as Miss Abramson, but I got married during the summer and my new name is Mrs. Ratnaweera. When I was three years old, my mom enrolled me in dance class to help me learn to distinguish my right from my left. My mom never imagined it would turn into a life-long passion. I still value the experiences I had performing throughout Southern California. It brings me joy to lead students into expressing themselves through the arts.
I am very happy to teach Third grade because it allows me to "travel"
into space, "ride" the Polar Express, and "go"
back in time to experience what life was like in the 1800's. I
grew up in Moreno Valley, CA with my parents and younger brother,
Ian. I earned my B.A. in Dance with a minor in Women's Studies
as well as my Multiple Subject Teaching Credential and Masters
of Arts in Teaching from the University of California, Irvine.
